Long before the Great Schism of 1054, Christianity flourished throughout Britain, Ireland, Gaul, Italy, Hispania and other regions of Western Europe. These lands produced generations of bishops, missionaries, monks, hermits, martyrs and holy women whose lives belong to the shared Christian heritage of East and West.

Orthodox Saints of Western Europe

This collection includes saints from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal, from the early Christian martyrs of the Roman Empire to the great missionaries and monastic founders of the first millennium.

Among them are well-known saints such as Saint Patrick of Ireland, Saint Benedict of Nursia, Saint Martin of Tours and Saint Gregory the Great, alongside lesser-known figures such as Saint Germanus of Auxerre, Saint Aemilian of Cogolla and Saint Martin of Braga.

Many of these saints lived centuries before the division between the Eastern and Western Churches. Their lives reveal the remarkable diversity of ancient Western Christianity and its close connections with the wider Christian world.

Rare Icons of Pre-Schism Western Saints

Icons of many Western saints can be surprisingly difficult to find. We are particularly interested in preserving the memory of lesser-known Orthodox saints of Western Europe and creating icons for Christians searching for their patron or namesake saint.

Our icons are carefully reproduced on prepared wooden panels and individually hand-finished with natural beeswax in our family workshop in Portugal.
