Icon of Saint Germanus of Auxerre — Bishop, Defender of Orthodoxy, Spiritual Father of Saint Patrick and Saint Genevieve | Handcrafted Orthodox Icon
Saint Germanus of Auxerre is one of the towering figures of fifth-century Christianity — a man who began his life as a Roman lawyer and military governor, and ended it as one of the most beloved bishops in the history of the Western Church. His story is a reminder that God can call a person to holiness at any moment — and that the second half of a life can be far greater than the first.
Born into a noble Gallo-Roman family in Auxerre, he received an excellent education in the best schools of Arles and Lyon, then studied law in Rome, where he eventually became a lawyer. Married, he was appointed Duke of the border regions of Gaul. He was powerful, successful, and entirely worldly — until the day everything changed.
The elderly local bishop Saint Amator called the governor to the church, locked the doors behind him, and against Germanus's will, tonsured him into clergy. Germanus accepted the extraordinary intervention as the hand of God. He gave away his property to the poor and lived as a pauper. For the remaining thirty years of his life, he renounced worldly vanities, lived chastely with his wife as a sister, distributed his wealth to the poor and the Church, abstained from wheaten bread, wine and oil, eating only barley bread he prepared himself, often fasting for days. Clothed in a simple cowl and tunic, he wore a haircloth and slept on ashes.
His holiness was matched by his energy. Soon the Pope sent him and another bishop, Saint Lupus of Troyes, on a special mission to root out the Pelagian heresy from Great Britain. Through tireless preaching, numerous miracles, and the example of his undying charity, Saint Germanus helped win Britain's Christians back to the true faith. According to tradition, they victoriously debated Pelagianism at Verulamium — later St. Albans. During this trip he also assisted the Britons against a joint attack by the Saxons and the Picts, leading them into battle with the battle cry "Alleluia!" — a sound so overwhelming that it frightened off the marauders, in what became known as the Alleluia Victory.
On his way to Britain, in one of the Gallic towns, the saints saw a little girl standing in the crowd. Saint Germanus blessed her and announced that the girl, named Genevieve, would be a great saint. That child grew up to become the patroness of Paris — Saint Genevieve, who stood firm when Attila threatened the city. Germanus had recognized her holiness before she could have known it herself.
His connection to Ireland's apostle is no less remarkable. According to tradition, Germanus ordained Saint Patrick bishop, sending him forth as the Enlightener of Ireland. In the span of a single episcopate, Germanus thus helped shape the course of Christianity in Britain, France, and Ireland simultaneously.
Back home, Saint Germanus used his political expertise for his people's good. When the Roman general Aetius sent a pagan army to suppress a revolt among the Christians of Armorica, Germanus personally traveled to Ravenna to appeal for their pardon — and won. He died there, far from home, pleading for the lives of others. His body was carried back to France, and his obsequies at Auxerre constituted one of the most magnificent funerals ever recorded. His tomb soon became a center of pilgrimage, and he was widely venerated as a saint in France, Britain, and Ireland.
His relics rest in the Abbey of Saint-Germain in Auxerre. The feast of Saint Germanus is celebrated on July 31 in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and on August 13 in some traditions.
