The Last Judgment icon is an Orthodox iconographic depiction of the coming end of the world—the universal Last Judgment, which will be carried out by Jesus Christ during His Second Coming. It portrays apocalyptic scenes, the final judgment of all humanity, the resurrection of the dead, hellish torments for unrepentant sinners, and the heavenly bliss of the righteous.
The Meaning and Purpose
The images of the Last Judgment were not meant to terrify but rather to make a person reflect on their sins—"not to despair, not to lose hope, but to begin repentance."
The Last Judgment represents the final chapter in the history of humanity, as foretold in the Old Testament, the Gospel of Matthew, and the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse) by John the Theologian. In Byzantine art, this complex scene was developed in the 11th–12th centuries, becoming a key element in church murals, traditionally placed on the western wall. In Russian iconography, it has been known since the 15th century.
Composition of the Icon
The composition is divided into multiple tiers:
1. Upper Tier: Depicts the Holy Trinity, surrounded by angels and saints rejoicing in paradise.
2. Second Tier: Features Christ as the Judge, seated on a throne of glory, with apostles on either side. At His feet, Adam and Eve kneel in supplication.
3. Third Tier: Shows the Prepared Throne (Etimasia), with a cross and angels holding scrolls. Righteous souls approach the throne.
4. Fourth and Largest Tier: Depicts the judgment process:
- Scales weigh each person’s deeds, while demons try to tip them towards sin.
- A naked youth bound to a pillar represents the "merciful fornicator", saved from eternal torment by his acts of charity but denied paradise due to his sins.
- On the right, the resurrection of the dead is depicted: the deceased rise from their graves and emerge from the bellies of beasts and fish.
- Four medallions represent the destructive empires: Babylon (bear), Persia (lion), Macedonia (griffin), and Rome (horned beast).
- On the left, the righteous saints approach the gates of paradise, where Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob welcome them in "Abraham’s Bosom". Above them, two angels stand before the Virgin Mary on her throne. Souls of righteous monks ascend into heaven.
At the center of the icon, a giant serpent with a red head extends toward Adam’s heel, fulfilling God's words: "...he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel" (Genesis 3:15). Its scaly body is wrapped in rings labeled with sins ("tollhouses"), and its tail disappears into hell. In the abyss of hell, Satan sits in a gaping demonic mouth, holding Judas Iscariot on his lap. He chains the damned souls—both heretics and Orthodox believers, the rich and the poor, laypeople, monks, and metropolitans.
At the very bottom, the torments of hell are vividly depicted.
Purpose of the Icon
The Last Judgment icon was created to revive the spirituality of believers and remind them that a repentant sinner may still rely on God's mercy. However, if one does not abandon sinful thoughts and bad habits in this life, it may be too late when the hour of Judgment arrives. The Kingdom of God will become unattainable.
