The Synaxis of Saint John the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord icon (c. 1750) depicts the life and ministry of Saint John the Baptist, preserved in the Russian Orthodox tradition. Born to the priest Zechariah and the righteous Elizabeth, John’s birth was foretold by the Archangel Gabriel after years of prayer from his parents. From early on, John was dedicated to God, growing up in the wilderness, preparing for his prophetic mission through fasting, prayer, and contemplation.

Around the age of 30, John began preaching on the banks of the Jordan River, calling people to repentance and baptizing them in preparation for the coming of Christ. Jesus Himself came to the Jordan to receive baptism from John, marking the beginning of His public ministry. John continued his work, boldly confronting sin and calling for righteousness, fearlessly denouncing Herod Antipas for his unlawful marriage to Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.

Saint John’s earthly life ended martyrically. Imprisoned for his fearless proclamation of truth, he was ultimately beheaded at the request of Salome, Herodias’ daughter. His faithful disciples and devout followers preserved his relics with great reverence. Believers pray before this icon for courage in proclaiming the truth, steadfast faith, and guidance in spiritual life.
