This Orthodox icon depicts the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia — a solemn and powerful witness to Christian faith in the face of brutal persecution.

The icon represents thousands of Orthodox Christians who were killed, tortured, imprisoned, or exiled during the atheistic persecutions of the 20th century, especially under the Soviet regime. Clergy and laity alike — bishops, priests, monks, nuns, royal figures, and ordinary believers — suffered for one “crime” only: their unwavering faith in Christ.

Icon Composition and Meaning

At the top of the icon is Christ “Enthroned in Glory” (Christ in Majesty), the eternal Judge and Victor over death. Beside Him stands the Theotokos (Mother of God) and Saint John the Baptist, forming the Deesis — the image of intercession for humanity.

Surrounding and below are saints from different eras of Russian Christianity:

At the center of the lower section stands the Royal Martyrs — Tsar Nicholas II and his family, who accepted suffering and death with Christian humility and forgiveness.

Below them are depicted children, orphans, and the innocent, reminding us that persecution spared no one — not even the weakest and most defenseless.

An angel bears the Gospel words:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5)

Faith in the Time of Godlessness

The 20th century was one of the most tragic periods in Christian history. Millions in Russia perished — not only in wars, but at the hands of their own persecutors who sought to eradicate faith, churches, and religious memory itself.

Yet this icon proclaims victory, not defeat.

The New Martyrs testify that:

• Faith cannot be destroyed by violence
• The Church of Christ cannot be erased by ideology
• Love is stronger than hatred
• Eternal life triumphs over death

Their blood became the seed of new spiritual life, preserving the Church through the darkest decades. Their prayers sustained believers in secret homes, prison camps, and exile.
