This Orthodox icon depicts Venerable Abraham of Galich, Chukhloma and Gorodets, a great Russian ascetic, disciple of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, and enlightener of the northern lands of Rus’ in the 14th century.
Life of the Saint
Venerable Abraham lived and labored in the monastery of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, where he underwent many years of spiritual testing and monastic obedience. After being found worthy of the priesthood, he sought a life of deeper silence and unceasing prayer. With the blessing of Saint Sergius, he departed in 1350 to the remote Galich region, then inhabited by pagan Chud tribes (modern Kostroma region).
Settling first in a deserted place, the saint later moved—by divine revelation—to a mountain where he discovered a miraculously radiant icon of the Mother of God, shining with unearthly light. News of the wonder reached Prince Dimitry of Galich, who asked Abraham to bring the holy icon into the city. The prince and clergy received the saint with honor, and through the icon many healings and miracles were performed.
Founder of Monasteries
With the prince’s support, Venerable Abraham built a church and monastery near Lake Chukhloma on the site of the icon’s appearance. The church was dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the monastery became a center of spiritual enlightenment for the local population.
Seeking solitude once again, the saint entrusted leadership to his disciple Porphyry and withdrew deeper into the wilderness. When disciples found him again, another monastery arose, dedicated to the Deposition of the Robe of the Mother of God, known as the “Great Abraham Desert.”
In total, Venerable Abraham founded four monasteries, all dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos:
- Dormition of the Mother of God
- Deposition of the Robe of the Mother of God
- Synaxis of the Mother of God
- Protection of the Mother of God
He reposed peacefully in 1375 at the Protection Monastery, having entrusted the abbacy to his disciple Innocent one year earlier.
