This sacred icon depicts one of the most profound moments in the Gospel — the discovery of the empty tomb on the morning of Christ’s Resurrection. The icon shows the holy women disciples approaching the tomb of Christ with myrrh and fragrant oils, according to the ancient burial custom.

These faithful followers of Christ are known in the Church as the Myrrh-Bearing Women — holy women who came to honor the body of their Divine Teacher with love and devotion. Among them are saints such as Mary Magdalene, Mary of Clopas, Salome the Myrrhbearer, Joanna, as well as Martha and Mary.

Early in the morning after the Sabbath, they came to the tomb where the body of Christ had been placed. On their way, they worried about how they would move the heavy stone and gain access past the Roman guards. But when they arrived, they encountered the Angel of the Lord, who announced the joyful message that changed the world: Christ had risen.

The angel proclaimed that they should not seek the Living One among the dead, for the tomb was empty and the Savior had risen from the dead. This moment became the first proclamation of the Resurrection and a powerful testimony of faith and devotion.
