Saint Spyridon of Trimythous Icon with a Lamb
Saint Spyridon of Trimythous, also known as St Spyridon or Spyridon the Wonderworker, was a 4th-century bishop and one of the most beloved saints of the Orthodox Church. Remembered for his extraordinary humility, compassion, and miracles, he is venerated as a powerful intercessor for people facing illness, financial difficulties, housing problems, and the everyday troubles of life.
This Saint Spyridon icon presents an especially tender image of the saint embracing a lamb. Rather than emphasizing episcopal dignity, the icon portrays St Spyridon as a humble shepherd — recalling both his early life as a shepherd and his spiritual calling as Bishop of Trimythous.
Who Was Saint Spyridon of Trimythous?
Saint Spyridon was born on the island of Cyprus in the 3rd century and lived a simple life as a shepherd before becoming Bishop of Trimythous. Even after receiving episcopal rank, he retained his humility and simplicity, traditionally represented by his distinctive woven shepherd’s cap.
St Spyridon became renowned for his charity, wisdom, and miraculous help to those in need. Orthodox tradition also remembers him among the bishops associated with the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325, where the Church defended the divinity of Christ against Arianism.
Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession both during his lifetime and after his death, he is widely known as Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker.
Meaning of the Lamb in the Saint Spyridon Icon
In this unusual icon, Saint Spyridon tenderly embraces a lamb. The image expresses his identity as both a literal shepherd in his early life and a spiritual shepherd entrusted with caring for the faithful.
The lamb recalls Christ’s image of the Good Shepherd and His words: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27).
Saint Spyridon’s simple shepherd’s cap is another characteristic element of his iconography. Although he became a bishop, Orthodox icons frequently preserve this humble head covering as a reminder that holiness is found not in worldly status but in faith, humility, and love.
The tenderness with which St Spyridon holds the lamb makes this icon a particularly moving image of pastoral care, mercy, and protection.
What Is Saint Spyridon Known For?
Saint Spyridon is especially venerated as a wonderworker and helper in difficult circumstances. The faithful traditionally turn to his intercession in times of illness, financial hardship, difficulties concerning a home or housing, work, travel, and other practical needs.
His relics are preserved on the Greek island of Corfu (Kerkyra), where Saint Spyridon has been especially venerated for centuries.
His feast day is celebrated on December 12 in the liturgical calendar used by many Orthodox Churches, corresponding to December 25 on the civil calendar for communities following the Old Calendar.
