The icon of All Saints. Wooden orthodox icon

This 18th-century Orthodox icon depicts the Synaxis of All Saints — one of the most theologically rich and visually grand compositions in the entire tradition of sacred iconography. The icon presents the fullness of the Church Triumphant: every rank of holiness gathered together in eternal glorification before the throne of God.

Composition

At the very summit of the icon, God the Father appears within a luminous celestial mandorla, surrounded by radiant clouds of heavenly glory — the eternal source from Whom all holiness flows and to Whom all saints are drawn.

At the centre stands the enthroned Christ the King, robed in royal garments and seated upon His glorious throne in majestic authority. He is flanked on either side by the two greatest intercessors of the Church: the Most Holy Theotokos — the Mother of God — standing at His right hand, and Saint John the Baptist and Forerunner at His left. This central triad forms the Deisis — the supreme prayer of intercession on behalf of all humanity — the theological heart of the entire composition.

Surrounding the throne are ranked choirs of Angels — Seraphim, Cherubim, and the heavenly host — their wings spread in adoration, serving ceaselessly before the face of God.

In the lower portion of the icon, the great assembly of the saints unfolds in distinct and ordered groups, reflecting the Church's veneration of every form of holiness:

  • The Holy Prophets — bearing scrolls of divine revelation, foretelling the coming of Christ
  • The Holy Apostles — the foundation of the Church, holding Gospels and crosses
  • The Holy Martyrs — crowned with the glory of their sacrifice, bearing palms and instruments of their passion
  • The Holy Bishops and Hierarchs — in episcopal vestments, having tended and guarded the flock of Christ
  • The Holy Monks and Ascetics — who conquered the world through prayer and repentance
  • The Holy Innocents and Children — the youngest members of the heavenly chorus, crowned by divine grace, reminding the faithful that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those with pure hearts

The entire composition breathes with a single theological truth: in Christ, all division ceases. Prophet and martyr, bishop and monk, man and woman, young and old — all are united in one eternal glorification.

Historical and Theological Significance

This icon originates from the 18th century, a period of remarkable artistic flourishing in Orthodox iconography, when compositions of the Synaxis of All Saints reached their most elaborate and detailed expression.

The icon is commemorated liturgically on the first Sunday after Pentecost, known as All Saints Sunday, when the Church gives thanks to God for all those who have been perfected in holiness — both those known by name and the countless multitudes known to God alone.

An Icon for Every Christian Home

This icon speaks to every believer, for every Christian has a patron among the saints depicted. It is a reminder that the faithful on earth are never alone — they are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1), and the prayers of all the saints rise before the throne of God on their behalf.
