This icon reflects the traditional iconographic type of the Immaculate Conception, a devotion especially cherished throughout the Spanish and Portuguese colonial world, with this composition rooted in the rich devotional art of eighteenth-century Mexico. The Virgin Mary is shown standing in serene, prayerful stillness, her hands folded gently upon her breast, her eyes lowered in humble contemplation. She rests upon a crescent moon and the sphere of the earth, drawing on the imagery of the Woman "clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet" from the Book of Revelation (12:1) — an image the Church has long applied to Mary as the pure vessel chosen from among all creation for the Incarnation of Christ.

Around her, a company of cherubim and angels surrounds her figure in adoration, framing her within the light of heaven and underscoring the singular grace granted to her from the very first moment of her existence — conceived, according to this ancient belief, entirely free from the stain of original sin, set apart from the beginning to become the Mother of God.

This image has long stood as a symbol of purity, grace, and hope, honoring Mary as the one through whom salvation entered the world, and as a model of humility and openness to God's will for all the faithful. Devotion to the Immaculate Conception spread widely across Mexico and Latin America during the colonial period, and paintings such as this one remain treasured expressions of that deep and enduring Marian piety.

Her feast day is celebrated on December 8.
