Saint Venerable Theodosius the Great, the Cenobiarch. Wooden orthodox icon.
Venerable Theodosius the Great, the Cenobiarch, lived during the fifth-sixth centuries and was the founder of cenobitic monasticism in Cappadocia. Renowned for his exceptional voice, he dedicated himself to church reading and singing. He fervently prayed for guidance on the path to salvation and was blessed by Saint Simeon the Stylite (September 1) during a visit to the Holy Land. Saint Theodosius was predicted to serve as a pastor in his future.
The Patriarch granted the monks' request, and Theodosius became the archimandrite of all Palestinian communal monasteries and received his nickname - "Cenobiarch".
Saint Theodosius was born in Cappadocia and was raised by his parents in the spirit of deep piety. He strove for hermitism and settled in the Palestinian desert, where he spent 30 years in strict abstinence and continuous prayer.
His ascetic lifestyle attracted many people who wanted to follow him. This led to the church becoming too small for all the monks who wanted to. After a special prayer from the saint, the coals in the censer suddenly burst into flames right in the middle of the desert - this place became the basis of the first communal monastery, which is today known as the Lavra.
This monastery became home to many social institutions, such as hotels for wanderers, hospitals separately for monks and ordinary people, as well as rest places for the elderly. Thanks to the prayers of Saint Theodosius, the miracle of multiplying bread occurred many times to feed the vast number of poor people who gathered around the monastery. Despite his long life, full of spiritual work and service to others, the saint passed away peacefully at the age of 105.
