Tikhvin Mother of God Icon – Orthodox Icon
This grace-filled Icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God is a reproduction of a work created around 1900 by the renowned Russian icon painter Joseph Semenovich Chirikov, during the flourishing period of traditional Russian iconography. Chirikov’s work is distinguished by strict fidelity to Orthodox canon, refined artistic skill, and profound spiritual depth.
The Tikhvin Icon of the Theotokos is one of the most venerated shrines of the Russian Orthodox Church. According to sacred tradition, the original icon was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist and miraculously appeared in Rus’ in the 14th century, hovering over the waters of the Tikhvinka River near Novgorod. On the site of this miraculous appearance, a monastery was founded, which became a major spiritual center of Northern Rus’.
In the icon, the Most Holy Mother of God is depicted holding the Christ Child on her left arm. The Infant Jesus blesses with His right hand and holds a scroll in His left, symbolizing divine wisdom and Gospel teaching. The face of the Theotokos radiates maternal tenderness, combined with a quiet sorrow foreseeing the future sufferings of Her Son.
