The Tree of Jesse icon is a profound theological image revealing the sacred genealogy of Jesus Christ through the lineage of the Most Holy Theotokos. Created after a 17th-century original preserved in the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts, this icon visually expresses the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and the unity of Sacred Scripture.

At the base of the composition lies Jesse, father of King David, shown reclining on the earth. From his chest grows a flourishing vine or tree, symbolizing the prophetic words of Isaiah: “There shall come forth a Rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots” (Isaiah 11:1–5). Along the branches appear the righteous ancestors of Christ, leading ultimately to the Virgin Mary, from whom Christ is born according to the flesh.

This icon is known in Greek tradition as “Mirovlitissa”, emphasizing the life-giving, grace-filled nature of Christ’s coming into the world.
