Wooden Icon of the Transfiguration of the Lord Jesus Christ. 

The original icon “The Transfiguration of the Lord” is attributed to the outstanding Byzantine and Moscow icon painter Theophanes the Greek (dated around 1403) and is kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

At the heart of the icon, Christ stands upon Mount Tabor, His garments radiant with uncreated light, revealing to His three closest disciples — Peter, James, and John — the divine glory hidden beneath His human flesh. It was here, on this mountain, that the disciples were granted a glimpse of what Christ truly is: not merely a teacher walking among them, but the eternal Son of God, in whom the fullness of divinity dwells. On either side of Him stand the prophets Elijah and Moses, drawn from opposite ends of salvation history to bear witness together to Christ as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. In the upper corners, angels carry out the will of God in bringing the two prophets to this meeting: on the left, an angel upon a cloud brings Elijah to converse with the Savior; on the right, an angel raises Moses from the tomb and leads him likewise to Christ's side — the living and the dead alike called to testify to the Lord of Glory.

The icon also unfolds the narrative in time, in keeping with the ancient tradition of Orthodox iconography, which often depicts a single event across several moments within one composition. To the lower left, Christ is shown ascending Mount Tabor together with the three apostles; to the lower right, He is shown descending the mountain afterward, instructing His disciples to keep silent about what they had seen until after His Resurrection.

The Transfiguration stands among the most profound feasts of the Church year, offering the faithful a foretaste of the glory that awaits all who are united to Christ. It reminds us that the light which shone on Tabor is not something foreign to us, but the very light for which we ourselves were created — the light of grace that transforms, illumines, and calls the whole of creation toward its true and final beauty in God.
