The Icon of the Myrrh Bearing Women

This Orthodox icon depicts the Myrrh-Bearing Women, the holy female disciples who were the first witnesses of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The image illustrates the Gospel events of the early morning after the Sabbath, when the women came to the tomb to anoint the Lord’s body with precious myrrh, according to ancient Jewish custom.

On their way, the women worried about the heavy stone sealing the tomb and the Roman guards placed there. Yet their love and faith overcame fear. At the tomb, they were met by the Angel of the Lord, who drove away the guards and proclaimed the joyful news: “Why do you seek the Living among the dead? He is not here—He is risen!” The stone was rolled away, and the tomb stood empty.

These faithful women—later glorified as saints—became the first evangelists of the Resurrection, carrying the good news to the apostles and the world. Their courage, devotion, and unwavering love for Christ remain a powerful example for all believers.
