The Forty Holy Martyrs of Sebaste icon (19th century) commemorates the courageous Christian soldiers who suffered and died for their faith in Sebaste in 313 AD. On the margins of the icon are depicted the Guardian Angel, Archangel Michael, Great-Martyr Nikita, and Great-Martyr Anastasia, serving as intercessors for the faithful. These martyrs boldly confessed Christ before their persecutors, refusing to offer sacrifice to pagan gods, even under the threat of imprisonment, torture, and death.

The forty soldiers, initially imprisoned by the pagan commander Agricola, were subjected to extreme cold on the frozen lake of Sebaste. Miraculously, God protected them throughout the night, and one by one, their steadfast faith inspired even their guard, Aglaïus, to join them in martyrdom. Despite severe beatings, freezing conditions, and eventual execution, their courage and unwavering trust in God were rewarded with heavenly crowns, demonstrating the triumph of faith over worldly trials.
