The upper part of the icon depicts the Great Entrance, when the Holy Gifts prepared for the Eucharist are solemnly carried toward the altar.
Deacons lead the procession carrying a light and the Gospel. Behind them come priests bearing the Eucharistic Gifts. One carries the diskos above his head with the sacrificial Lamb represented as the Christ Child, while others carry the chalice and liturgical veil.
The procession moves toward a three-domed church. Behind the altar stand Saint Basil the Great and Saint John Chrysostom, the great authors of the Orthodox Divine Liturgies, with Saint Gregory the Theologian between them.
The earthly celebration of the Eucharist thus becomes inseparable from the heavenly Liturgy.
Angels and the Heavenly Liturgy
Above the procession appear seraphim, cherubim and the nine ranks of angels, represented within mandorla-like forms.
In the upper left, amid blue clouds, the historic composition depicts the Lord Sabaoth blessing the Liturgy.
The presence of the heavenly powers reveals one of the central ideas of the icon: the Divine Liturgy celebrated on earth participates in the eternal worship of heaven.
Saints, Clergy and the Faithful
Below the liturgical procession appears an extraordinary gathering representing those commemorated during the Liturgy.
On one side are apostles, hierarchs, monastics and desert fathers. On the other are prophets, martyrs and holy women.
The lowest register brings the vision closer to earthly Christian society. Groups of praying people stand on either side of the Royal Doors. Beneath canopies appear a ruler on one side and a metropolitan or patriarch on the other, surrounded by laypeople, clergy and monks.
The result is an image in which heaven and earth, the living and the saints, clergy and laity are united around the mystery of the Eucharist.
