Icon: The Twelve Great Feasts and the Resurrection of Christ
Original Icon: 19th century, Palekh
The Twelve Great Feasts are twelve Orthodox Christian celebrations, each represented by a corresponding icon. These feasts are traditionally divided into fixed and movable ones. The fixed feasts occur on the same date each year, while the dates of the movable feasts are determined by Easter and shift accordingly.
The liturgical calendar begins with the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross, is depicted in an icon that is also known as The Elevation of the Cross or The Triumph of the Cross.
The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple.
The Nativity of Christ, is depicted in an icon that illustrates the moment of Jesus’ birth in a cave from the Virgin Mary.
The icon of The Baptism of Christ represents the feast, showing Jesus being baptized in the waters of the Jordan River.
The Presentation of Christ in the Temple portrays the moment when the Virgin Mary brought the infant Jesus to the temple.
The feast of the Annunciation, is represented by an icon depicting the meeting of the Most Pure Virgin Mary with Archangel Gabriel, who announces to her that she will give birth to the Son of the Most High, Jesus.
The eighth feast, The Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, is a movable celebration observed on the Sunday before Easter, the sixth Sunday of Great Lent. This feast is commonly known as Palm Sunday.
The icon of The Ascension of the Lord depicts the end of Christ’s earthly life and His return to God the Father. This is a movable feast celebrated on the 40th day after Easter.
The icon of Pentecost (The Descent of the Holy Spirit) illustrates a scene from the Old Testament when the Triune God descended upon the apostles, granting them divine gifts and abilities. This day, observed on the 50th day after Easter (the eighth Sunday after Easter), is regarded as the founding of the Christian Church.
The Transfiguration of the Lord.
The last feast in the liturgical calendar is the Dormition of the Theotokos. The icon of this feast depicts a solemn farewell ceremony for the Virgin Mary. Above her lifeless body, Jesus holds a small infant, symbolizing the beginning of her heavenly life.
At the center of the icon is the Feast of Feasts – The Resurrection of Christ (Easter).
The icon is made by printing on a wooden board (mdf). Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 1,6 cm. The board is covered with primer. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.
Our icons are made by Orthodox craftsmen.
We hope it will be a good gift for you and your loved ones.
