The Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” (also known as “The Three Joys”) is a beloved image in the Orthodox tradition, symbolizing the merciful intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and the miraculous help granted through her prayers. This icon is connected with a remarkable story that took place in Moscow at the beginning of the 18th century.
A devout painter brought to Russia a copy of an Italian icon depicting the Holy Family. He entrusted it to a relative—a priest of the Trinity Church on Gryazekh Street. The priest later donated the icon to his parish church, where it was placed above the porch, near the entrance. For forty years it remained there quietly, until the grace of God revealed its miraculous power.
According to tradition, a noble woman experienced several tragedies in rapid succession:
her husband was falsely accused and exiled, her estate confiscated, and her only beloved son taken captive during war. In utter despair, she prayed with tears to the Queen of Heaven for help. One night she heard a voice instructing her to seek the icon of the Holy Family and pray before it. After searching many Moscow churches, she finally found the image on the porch of the Trinity Church.
With deep faith she prayed before the icon—and soon received three joyful news:
her husband was acquitted and returned from exile,
her son was freed from captivity,
and her estate was restored.
From that time the icon became known as “The Three Joys.”
In the icon, the Mother of God is seated with the Divine Child on her lap. To her right stands Saint Joseph the Betrothed, and to her left—Saint John the Baptist, both gazing upon the Christ Child with reverent love.
On the side panels are depicted the Guardian Angel and Saint Catherine, emphasizing the theme of divine protection and heavenly intercession.
This icon is cherished as a source of consolation for those facing sorrow, despair, or seemingly impossible situations, reminding believers that through the prayers of the Theotokos, God grants unexpected joy and deliverance.
