The Feodorov Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most venerated and historically significant icons in Russia. According to tradition, it was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist and is iconographically similar to the Vladimir Icon, depicting the tender embrace between the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child.
The icon takes its name from Grand Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich (†1246), father of Saint Alexander Nevsky, who bore the baptismal name Theodore (Feodor) in honor of Saint Theodore Stratilates. Discovered by his brother Saint Yuri Vsevolodovich near the ancient city of Gorodets, the icon became a treasured family blessing. In 1239, Prince Yaroslav-Theodore blessed his son, Saint Alexander Nevsky, with this holy icon on the occasion of his marriage, and it remained the saint's personal prayer image throughout his life and military campaigns.
After Saint Alexander's death in 1263, the icon was preserved in sacred memory and became not only a princely treasure but a protector of the Russian land—a source of countless miracles and a symbol of the Theotokos's constant intercession for Russia through centuries of trials.
