Icon of Saints Basil the Great, Capitolina, Nicholas the Wonderworker, Polycarp of Smyrna & Guardian Angel | Family Icon

At the crown of the icon stands the Holy Face — the Mandylion, the most ancient image of Christ in the Christian tradition: the holy face of the Lord miraculously imprinted upon a cloth and given to the world as the prototype of all sacred iconography. From the earliest centuries, the Mandylion was venerated as the protection of home, city, and army — a sign that God Himself has willed to show His face to those who seek Him.

Below it, gathered as if in prayer around the central light, stand five heavenly intercessors — each with his or her own history, each chosen by the family who commissioned this icon to stand before God on their behalf.

Saint Basil the Great (c. 329–379), Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs and among the greatest theologians in the history of the Church. He composed the Divine Liturgy that still bears his name. He founded the first hospitals, orphanages, and hospices in the Christian world — structures of mercy that changed civilization. His theological writings remain the foundation of Orthodox doctrine to this day. His feast day is celebrated on January 1/14.

Holy Martyr Capitolina suffered for Christ in Cappadocia during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century. Together with her faithful servant Eroteis, she endured martyrdom rather than deny her Lord. She is venerated as an intercessor in times of suffering and bodily illness — a saint who knows what it means to hold fast when everything urges surrender. Her feast day is October 27 / November 9.

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (c. 270–345), Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, needs no introduction — and yet his presence on this icon is never simply traditional. He is here because someone needed him. The saint who gave in secret, who saved the innocent from execution, who calmed storms at sea and appeared to the dying in the night — his image has stood in Orthodox homes for seventeen centuries because he is always near those who call on him. His feasts are celebrated on December 6/19 and May 9/22.

The Guardian Angel — every baptized Christian is entrusted from the moment of their Baptism to the keeping of a heavenly guardian who accompanies them through every hour of every day, unseen but present: turning away dangers, lifting prayers toward the throne of God, and waiting at the threshold of death to receive the soul into light. An icon of the Guardian Angel is the most intimate of all sacred images — a reminder that not one moment of your life has ever been lived alone.

Saint Polycarp of Smyrna (c. 70–156), Bishop of Smyrna, was a direct disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian — one of the last living links to the age of Christ Himself. He served the Church for nearly ninety years, and when at last they brought him to the arena to be burned, he answered those who demanded he deny his faith with words that have echoed through the centuries: "Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong — how then can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?" He was burned alive. His feast day is February 23 / March 8.
