Saint Seraphim's Life of Prayer
Saint Seraphim of Sarov was born Prokhor Moshnin in Kursk in 1754.
He entered the monastic community at Sarov as a young man and eventually received the monastic name Seraphim.
His spiritual path led from communal monastic life toward increasingly profound solitude.
He spent long periods in the forest near Sarov devoted to prayer, fasting and ascetic labor.
One of the best-known traditions concerning the saint describes his prolonged prayer upon a stone, repeating:
“God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”
This episode became one of the defining images of Saint Seraphim's ascetic life and appears within the narrative cycle of this icon.
From Hermit to Spiritual Elder
Although Saint Seraphim sought solitude, the later period of his life was characterized by service to others.
Pilgrims came seeking his prayers, spiritual advice and consolation.
