Saint Venerable Wonderworker Seraphim of Sarov with his Life – Icon with Scenes from the Life of St. Seraphim
This icon of Saint Seraphim of Sarov depicts the great Venerable Wonderworker Seraphim of Sarov surrounded by a detailed cycle of scenes illustrating major events of his holy life. Around the central image, in a circular arrangement, are miniature depictions of the key moments in the earthly path of Saint Seraphim, making this icon an exceptional example of hagiographical Orthodox iconography.
Seraphim of Sarov, born as Prokhor Moshnin on July 19, 1759, in a devout merchant family in Kursk, is one of the most revered saints of the Orthodox world. From childhood, his life was marked by miraculous signs: he survived a fall from a church bell tower unharmed, later received healing through the miraculous Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign,” and from a young age dedicated himself to a path of prayer and asceticism. At the age of seventeen he chose the monastic life, and his mother blessed him with a simple copper cross—an object he carried until his blessed repose.
Entering the Sarov Assumption Monastery, the young ascetic distinguished himself by obedience and spiritual zeal. In 1786 he took monastic tonsure with the name Seraphim (“fiery”), later becoming hierodeacon and hieromonk. Seeking greater spiritual struggles, Saint Seraphim of Sarov withdrew into hermitage on the Sarovka River, where he endured fierce temptations and engaged in extraordinary ascetic feats. For a thousand days and nights he prayed upon a stone, raising his hands up to heaven with the words: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Even when attacked and nearly killed by robbers, he forgave them, embodying the Christian ideal of humility and mercy.
After this, the saint embraced the feat of silence for three years. For his unwavering devotion, Saint Seraphim received the gifts of clairvoyance, healing, and miracle working. Later, emerging from seclusion, he welcomed countless visitors seeking spiritual guidance, greeting each with his radiant words: “Christ is Risen, my joy!” His teachings, grounded in Scripture and the writings of the Holy Fathers, continue to inspire generations of believers. The saint’s earthly life ended peacefully in 1833 as he knelt in prayer before the icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness,” which he deeply revered throughout his life.
Even after his repose, miracles occurred at his grave, eventually contributing to his glorification in 1903. Today Saint Seraphim of Sarov is honored as one of the greatest saints and wonderworkers of the Orthodox Christian tradition.
This icon of Saint Seraphim of Sarov with his life not only reflects his spiritual legacy but also serves as a profound devotional image for prayer, contemplation, and the strengthening of faith.
