Saint Venerable Martyr Eudokia of Heliopolis. Wooden orthodox icon.

Saint Eudocia was a Samaritan by birth. She lived in Heliopolis in Phoenicia. Distinguished in her youth by her rare beauty and slenderness, Eudocia led a sinful life, selling her body. Rich suitors and admirers came to Eudocia from different countries, so that over time she became very wealthy and was held in high esteem by the local authorities.

The Lord, wishing to save Eudocia's soul from eternal destruction, arranged it so that an elderly monk named Herman visited the area where Eudocia lived. Herman had the custom of reading the Holy Scriptures aloud, and Eudocia accidentally overheard him reading the prophecies about the Second Coming of Christ and the Last Judgment.

This reading made a great impression and confused Eudocia, since she realized that it was she, a sinner, who would face the punishments predicted in the Bible. Having met the monk Herman, Evdokia learned from him about the Christian faith and the afterlife. The monk's words fell on good soil. Having believed in Christ with all her heart, Evdokia was baptized, gave all her treasures to the poor and took monastic vows at the nearest monastery.

Living for many years in this monastery, Evdokia devoted herself entirely to the feats of fasting, prayer and purification of the soul. Over the years, she achieved spiritual maturity and was elevated to the rank of abbess of her monastery. Having accepted the leadership position, Evdokia directed her efforts to good deeds. She fed and clothed wanderers who visited her monastery, and healed the sick with her prayers.

Thus, Evdokia labored in good deeds and monastic feats for 56 years. In 152 (according to other sources - around 160-170) she ended her righteous life as a martyr. For spreading the Christian faith, Eudokia was slandered in witchcraft and deception. Without a trial, she was taken to the place of execution and beheaded.
