Saint Venerable Abbot Nikon of Radonezh

Saint Nikon is a disciple of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. He was born in Yuryev-Polsky. At a young age, having heard about the Angelic life of Saint Sergius and wanting to follow him, the saint came to Saint Sergius and asked to join the ranks of monks. Saint Sergius, foreseeing in him a future great ascetic and testing his humility and patience, sent Saint Nikon to his disciple Saint Athanasius of Vysotsk. Here Saint Nikon learned the art of doing the mind, studied the Holy Scriptures and succeeded in virtue and purity.

Raised to the rank of hieromonk, Saint Nikon returned to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius and became a beloved and close disciple of Saint Sergius. Seeing the spiritual maturity and experience of St. Nikon, St. Sergius appointed him his successor before his death.

Having become abbot, St. Nikon supported everything that was established by his teacher: he loved prayer and fasting, worked equally with the brethren, for whom he constantly cared with love.

Under St. Nikon, on July 5, 1422, during the construction of a new church in the name of the Life-Giving Trinity, the incorrupt relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh were found.

After many labors and exploits, St. Nikon died on November 17, 1426 and was buried near the reliquary of his teacher. In 1560, a church was built over the grave of the saint in his name. The relics of St. Nikon, resting here under the tomb, are separated from the reliquary of the great Sergius by one stone wall.
