Icon of Saint Seraphim of Vyritsa Venerable Elder and Wonderworker | Handcrafted Orthodox Icon
Saint Seraphim of Vyritsa (Vasily Nikolaevich Muravyev, 1866–1949) is one of the most beloved Russian saints of the twentieth century — a man whose life moved from extraordinary worldly success to extraordinary holiness, as if God had prepared him for both paths before calling him fully to Himself.
Born into a devout peasant family in the Yaroslavl region, Vasily lost his father as a young boy and went to the city to work, rising through sheer diligence to become one of Russia's most successful fur traders, with goods sold across Europe. Yet throughout his prosperous years, his heart was quietly turned toward God. Together with his wife, and with the blessing of the Elder Barnabas of Gethsemane, they made a shared vow to live as brother and sister and prepare for monastic life. When the Revolution came and swept away his business and wealth, he did not flee Russia — he embraced the path he had long been preparing for.
In 1920 he received monastic tonsure at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Petrograd, eventually taking the great schema with the name Seraphim, in honor of Saint Seraphim of Sarov. He became the spiritual father of the Lavra and a man known for the gift of clairvoyance — it is said he foretold the future patriarchate of Archbishop Alexis (Simansky) as early as 1927. In 1930, gravely ill, he moved to the small town of Vyritsa, where despite his suffering he continued to receive the countless people who sought his counsel, blessing, and prayer — refusing to turn anyone away for as long as he had breath. During the Second World War, following the example of Saint Seraphim of Sarov, he prayed daily on a stone in the garden — an ascetic feat of extraordinary courage for a man barely able to stand. From the very beginning of the war he proclaimed with certainty that Russia would be victorious.
He fell asleep in the Lord on April 3, 1949, and was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000.
