Saint Rostislav the Great, Prince of Kiev and Smolensk (Baptismal Name: Michael)
This icon honors Saint Rostislav Mstislavich, a righteous and wise ruler of 12th-century Rus’, remembered both as a great prince and a devoted builder of the Orthodox faith. Born into the noble family of Grand Prince Mstislav the Great, and brother to the holy Prince Vsevolod-Gavriil, Saint Rostislav played a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual and political life of his homeland.
From 1125 onward, when Smolensk was entrusted to him, Prince Rostislav began transforming the region into a flourishing principality with growing independence from Kiev. He ruled Smolensk for over 40 years, founding new cities—Rostislavl, Mstislavl, Krichev, and Propoisk—and establishing the Smolensk princely dynasty.
One of his most profound contributions was the creation of the independent Diocese of Smolensk in 1136, whose first bishop, Manuel, worked closely with the prince in strengthening the Orthodox faith. Saint Rostislav actively supported church building, including the expansion of the Dormition Cathedral in Smolensk, and promoted the spiritual growth of the entire region.
A renowned builder and protector of his land, he oversaw the construction of the Smolensk Fortress and the Savior Cathedral of the Smiadyn Boris-and-Gleb Monastery. His legacy continued through his son, Prince David, who transferred the relics of Saints Boris and Gleb to Smolensk.
Saint Rostislav Mstislavich remains a shining example of a Christian ruler—wise, courageous, and zealously devoted to the Church. This icon is a tribute to his saintly life, his defense of Orthodoxy, and his enduring contribution to the spiritual heritage of Rus’.
