This historic icon, painted in 1862 by the renowned iconographer Vasily Makarovich Peshekhonov, depicts Saint Wenceslas (Vyacheslav, Václav), Prince of Bohemia — a righteous ruler, martyr, and heavenly patron of the Czech lands.
His Life
Saint Wenceslas was the grandson of Saint Ludmila, who raised him in the Christian faith and personally oversaw his spiritual formation. He received an excellent education from the presbyter Paul, a disciple of Saint Methodius. The young prince was highly educated, fluent in Slavonic, Latin, and Greek, and deeply grounded in Christian teaching.
After the death of his father, Prince Vratislav, in 920, eighteen-year-old Wenceslas ascended the throne of Bohemia.
From the beginning of his reign, he ruled with wisdom, justice, and Christian mercy. He worked tirelessly to strengthen Christianity in his land. He ransomed pagan children who had been sold into slavery and ensured they were raised in the Christian faith. He honored the clergy, beautified churches, and supported liturgical life.
Saint Wenceslas rejected cruelty in governance — he abolished torture and refused to apply the death penalty. His reign was marked by peace, charity, and devotion to God.
One of his great achievements was transferring the relics of the martyr Saint Vitus to Prague and building a magnificent church in his honor — the foundation of what would later become St. Vitus Cathedral.
Martyrdom
Not all welcomed his pious rule. Certain nobles, influenced by political ambitions and foreign interests, conspired against him. They persuaded his younger brother, Boleslav, to seize power.
Under the pretense of inviting him to the consecration of a church, Boleslav lured Wenceslas into a trap. Though warned of the conspiracy, the saint refused to suspect evil. As he approached the church for morning prayers, he was attacked at the entrance and murdered by his brother and accomplices in the year 935.
His mutilated body lay unburied for several days, stirring sorrow and unrest among the people. His mother ensured his burial at the princely church. It was said that the blood shed at the church doors could not easily be washed away — a silent witness to his martyrdom.
Later, under pressure from the people who already venerated Wenceslas as a martyr, Boleslav repented and transferred his brother’s relics to Prague, placing them in the Church of Saint Vitus.
Spiritual Significance
Saint Wenceslas is honored as a passion-bearer (strastoterpets) — one who, like Saints Boris and Gleb, accepted death without resistance, entrusting himself entirely to God rather than engaging in fratricidal struggle.
Together with his grandmother Saint Ludmila, he is venerated as a patron saint of the Czech people.
