Saint Righteous John the Russian. Wooden orthodox icon.

Saint John the Russian was born in the late 17th century in Little Russia and was raised in piety and love for the Church. As a soldier in Peter the Great’s army, he fought in the Russo-Turkish War and was captured in 1711. Sold into slavery, he was taken to Prokopion in Asia Minor, where he endured hardships and was pressured to convert to Islam. Despite beatings and suffering, he remained steadfast in his faith, declaring, “I was born a Christian, and a Christian I shall die.”

Over time, his master ceased tormenting him and entrusted him with caring for the livestock. Living in the stable, Saint John dedicated his nights to prayer and often secretly visited the Church of St. George, where he received Holy Communion. Though a slave, he generously helped the poor and sick.

Sensing his approaching death, he asked for the Holy Gifts, which were safely delivered to him in an apple. After receiving Communion, he peacefully passed away on May 27, 1730. His body was buried with Christian honors, and after three and a half years, his incorrupt relics were miraculously discovered.

His relics, known for countless miracles, were enshrined in the Church of St. George and later in a new church built in his honor in 1898. In 1924, the relics were transferred to Euboea, Greece, where they remain today, attracting thousands of pilgrims, especially on May 27, his feast day. Saint John the Russian is venerated throughout Mount Athos, especially at the Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon.
