Saint Right-Believing princess Anna of Kashin, patroness of Kashin and Tver. Wooden orthodox icon.
Few lives in the history of the Russian Church speak as eloquently of grief transformed into holiness as the life of the blessed Princess Anna of Kashin — a woman who bore loss upon loss with such quiet faith that the Church has never ceased to honor her memory.
Born in 1294 into the princely house of Rostov, Anna was given in marriage to Grand Prince Michael Yaroslavich of Tver, one of the most beloved and principled rulers of his age. Together they built a Christian home and family in the full knowledge that their times were dangerous and uncertain — for Russia lay under the shadow of the Mongol-Tatar yoke, and the price of princely dignity was often paid in blood. In 1318, that price fell upon their household: Michael was summoned to the Horde and there murdered — later canonized by the Church as a holy martyr who chose death over dishonor. Anna was left a widow, her husband gone, her world broken.
Yet it is precisely here that her story deepens. Rather than retreating into bitterness or despair, Anna turned toward God with a completeness that only great sorrow can produce. She entered the monastic life, receiving the veil first under the name Euphrosyne at the Sophia Monastery in Tver, and later transferring to the Dormition Monastery in Kashin. There, in the final years of her earthly life, she received the great schema — the highest degree of Orthodox monasticism, the angelic habit — and with it her name was restored: Anna. She fell asleep in the Lord on October 2, 1338, having traveled the full distance from princess to bride of Christ.
Her path to full canonization was itself remarkable — a centuries-long journey through recognition, controversy, and ultimate glorification that mirrors in some ways the endurance of the Russian Church itself. She is today venerated as the heavenly patroness and protectress of the cities of Kashin and Tver, and her memory is kept with great love throughout central Russia.

Who prays to Saint Anna of Kashin and for what:
Saint Anna is above all an intercessor for those carrying the weight of grief — widows, those who have lost a spouse or a loved one to violence or sudden death, and those who have had to rebuild their lives from the ground up after devastating loss. She is also a patroness of monastic life and of those discerning a deeper call to prayer and withdrawal from the world. Women named Anna celebrate their name day on her feast, and she is a deeply meaningful patron for anyone seeking the grace to transform suffering into holiness rather than bitterness. This icon makes a beautiful and consoling gift for a widow, for someone entering a new chapter of life after loss, or for any soul learning — as Anna learned — that God can be found most fully in the place where everything else has fallen away.
