This wooden Orthodox icon presents Saint Paul the Apostle, created by the hand of the great iconographer Andrei Rublev, one of the most revered masters of medieval Russian iconography. The original 15th-century icon is part of the celebrated “Zvenigorod Tier”, a group of three masterpieces depicting Christ the Savior, Archangel Michael, and Apostle Paul.

These icons once adorned the Zvenigorod Assumption Cathedral on Gorodok, where they formed the local icon tier of the iconostasis. Today, this historic work of sacred art is preserved in the State Tretyakov Gallery, treasured for its spiritual depth, tranquility, and Rublev’s unmistakable harmony of line and color.

In this icon, Saint Paul is shown as the wise and fiery Apostle to the Nations—his face thoughtful, ascetic, and filled with inward spiritual light. Rublev captured both the humility and the divine inspiration of the great preacher who carried the Gospel “to the ends of the earth.”
