Saint Patriarch of Alexandria John the Merciful. Wooden orthodox icon.

Icon of Saint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria

Original Icon: 18th century

This sacred icon depicts Saint John the Merciful (John the Almsgiver), Patriarch of Alexandria — one of the greatest examples of Christian charity and pastoral love in the Orthodox Church. The original 18th-century icon reflects the enduring veneration of this holy hierarch, whose life became a living Gospel of compassion.

His Life

Saint John was born in the 6th century on the island of Cyprus into the noble family of Epiphanius. In obedience to his parents, he married and had children. After the death of his wife and children, he renounced worldly life and embraced monasticism, becoming known for strict fasting, fervent prayer, and deep love for others.

Because of his holiness and reputation for virtue, Emperor Heraclius and the clergy urged him to accept the patriarchal throne of Alexandria. Though reluctant, he obeyed, understanding this as God’s will.

As Patriarch, Saint John faithfully guarded both the moral and doctrinal life of the Church. He defended Orthodoxy, expelling heresy from Alexandria and protecting the faithful from false teachings. Yet above all, he considered mercy toward the poor to be his primary pastoral duty.

The Patriarch of the Poor

At the beginning of his service, Saint John ordered that all the poor of Alexandria be counted. More than 7,000 people were found in need. He arranged for them to receive daily food from the Church.

Twice each week, on Wednesday and Friday, he would sit at the entrance of the cathedral, personally receiving anyone in need — settling disputes, comforting the oppressed, and distributing alms. Three times a week he visited hospitals to serve the sick.

During the Persian invasion under King Khosrow II, Jerusalem was plundered and many Christians were taken captive. Saint John used much of the Church treasury to ransom the captives, showing that for him, human lives were more precious than gold.

He never refused anyone who asked for help. On one occasion, he gave six silver coins to a beggar. The same man, disguised, approached him again and received six more. When he came a third time, the servants tried to drive him away, but the saint ordered twelve coins to be given, saying:
“Is it not Christ Himself who is testing me?”

In another instance, he repeatedly assisted a merchant who suffered shipwrecks. Finally, he entrusted him with a patriarchal ship filled with wheat. The merchant completed a successful voyage and repaid his debt.

A Life of Humility and Preparation for Eternity

Though he governed one of the greatest Christian sees of the time, Saint John lived as a true ascetic. He constantly remembered death and the coming judgment. He even had a coffin made for himself but ordered the craftsmen not to finish it. On each feast day they were to ask him whether it was time to complete it — a reminder to remain prepared for eternity.

Toward the end of his life, due to illness, he left Alexandria and returned to Cyprus. During the voyage, he saw in a vision a radiant man who told him:
“The King of kings calls you to Himself.”

Soon after arriving in his native city of Amathus, he peacefully reposed in the Lord (between 616 and 620).

Spiritual Meaning of the Icon

Saint John the Merciful is a powerful intercessor for:

  • Those struggling with poverty or hardship
  • Those seeking a compassionate heart
  • Church leaders and pastors
  • Families in need
  • Anyone desiring to grow in mercy and generosity

His life reminds believers that true greatness in the Church is measured not by authority, but by love. He teaches that almsgiving is not merely charity — it is an encounter with Christ Himself.

This icon serves as a call to Christian mercy and a reminder that every act of compassion becomes treasure in Heaven.

Holy Father John the Merciful, pray to God for us.
