This handmade Orthodox icon reproduces one of the oldest surviving Russian icons of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, created in 1294 for the Church of Saint Nicholas on Lipno Island, near Veliky Novgorod. The original icon is preserved in the Novgorod Museum of History and Architecture and is attributed to iconographer Alexa Petrov.

🌊 A Story of Healing and Divine Intervention

In the 13th century, Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich of Novgorod fell gravely ill and prayed fervently to Saint Nicholas. In a vision, the saint promised healing through a round icon shaped like a shield, which was miraculously discovered floating on Lake Ilmen. The prince was healed, and this icon was created to commemorate the miracle.

✨ Icon Features and Symbolism:

• Saint Nicholas is depicted in strict Byzantine style, with expressive dignity and ornamental detail

• Christ and the Theotokos appear beside him, offering a Gospel and omophorion, referencing his defense of Orthodoxy at the First Ecumenical Council

• The border is filled with a full heavenly assembly, including:

  • Top: Christ’s throne of preparation (Etimasia) with Archangels Michael and Gabriel, and Apostles
  • Sides: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, Cyril and Athanasius of Alexandria, Saints Boris and Gleb, George, Demetrius, Florus, Laurus, Cosmas, and Damian

This icon is both a masterpiece of 13th-century Russian Orthodox art and a visual theology of intercession, healing, and faith.
