Who is Saint Paula of Byzantium?

Saint Paula is commemorated on June 16, together with the martyrs Lucillian, Claudius, Hypatius, Paul, and Dionysius.
She lived during the persecutions under Emperor Aurelian and dedicated her life to helping imprisoned Christians. She secretly brought them food, washed their wounds, and lovingly prepared the bodies of the martyrs for burial.

Saint Paula witnessed the martyrdom of the saintly elder Lucillian and four young confessors. After their deaths, she returned to Nicomedia and continued her ministry despite great danger. Eventually she, too, was arrested and thrown into a fiery furnace — but by God’s power she remained unharmed. She was then taken to Byzantium, where she accepted a martyr’s crown by the sword.
