This wooden Orthodox icon depicts Saint John the Baptist and Forerunner of the Lord in the rare and deeply symbolic iconographic type known as “Angel of the Desert.” The image is based on an 18th-century original, now preserved in the State Museum of the History of Religion in Saint Petersburg.

Saint John the Baptist was born to the priest Zechariah and the righteous Elizabeth, after many years of childlessness. His birth was foretold by the Archangel Gabriel, who appeared to Zechariah in the Temple. During the massacre of the infants ordered by King Herod, Elizabeth fled with her child into the wilderness, while Zechariah was martyred in the Temple for refusing to reveal his son’s whereabouts.

Raised in the desert, Saint John lived a life of strict asceticism, prayer, fasting, and contemplation, preparing himself for his prophetic ministry. At about thirty years of age, he appeared on the banks of the Jordan River, calling people to repentance and baptizing them in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. It was Saint John who baptized Jesus Christ, witnessing the revelation of the Holy Trinity.

After the Baptism of Christ, John continued to preach repentance and boldly denounce sin, ultimately sealing his witness with martyrdom.

Iconography

In this image, Saint John is shown with angelic wings, symbolizing his role as the messenger (“angelos”) who prepares the way of the Lord. He is dressed in a hair garment and himation, revealing his ascetic life in the wilderness.

• In his left hand, he holds a cross-staff, an unfurled scroll, and a chalice containing his severed head, symbolizing his martyrdom

• The severed head foreshadows the sacrificial death of Christ

• The background contains scenes from the life of Saint John

This iconographic type is rooted in biblical prophecy:

“Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me” (Malachi 3:1)

The “Angel of the Desert” image has been known in Byzantine art since the late 13th–14th centuries and expresses the continuity between the Old and New Testaments.
