Saint Blaise (Vlasios) was a bishop of Sebaste in Armenia in the early 4th century, a physician by training and a shepherd of souls by calling. When the persecution of Christians under Emperor Licinius reached his city, he withdrew to a cave in the mountains, where he lived in prayer and fasting — and where, according to tradition, wild animals would come to him peacefully, seeking his blessing and healing. He was eventually discovered, arrested, and after enduring terrible tortures with unwavering faith, was beheaded for Christ around 316 AD. Before his martyrdom, he miraculously saved a child choking on a fish bone — an act of healing that became one of the most beloved miracles associated with his name.
