Icon of Saint Arnulf of Metz

Saint Arnulf of Metz is a remarkable early medieval bishop, monk, and spiritual figure whose life brought together noble service, Christian humility, monastic devotion, and a beloved tradition of miraculous providence. Born around 582 into a distinguished Frankish family, Arnulf served at the Merovingian court before becoming Bishop of Metz. After years of pastoral service, he eventually withdrew from public life and embraced the humility of monastic solitude at the Abbey of Remiremont.

One of the most treasured traditions surrounding Saint Arnulf tells of his episcopal ring. Troubled in conscience, he is said to have thrown the ring into the Moselle River and prayed for a sign of God's forgiveness. According to the story, the ring was later discovered inside a fish brought to his own kitchen — a miracle remembered as a sign of divine mercy and reconciliation.

Saint Arnulf is especially beloved for the miracle associated with his relics. When the people of Metz traveled to Remiremont to bring his remains home on a hot summer day, the pilgrims reportedly ran short of drink. Through the intercession of Saint Arnulf, the small amount of beer remaining in their vessel was said to multiply and provide enough refreshment for the entire company until they reached Metz.

This tradition gave rise to Saint Arnulf's enduring association with brewers and brewing. He is honored as a patron of brewers and is remembered with particular affection throughout regions where brewing has been an important part of Christian European heritage.

In iconography, Saint Arnulf may be depicted as a bishop or monk, sometimes holding a rake, recalling the humble manual labor associated with his final years of monastic life. His image combines the dignity of episcopal service with the humility of withdrawal from worldly honors.

Saint Arnulf also occupies an important place in European history. Through his son Ansegisel and his descendants, he became an ancestor of the Carolingian dynasty, the family associated with Charles Martel and, ultimately, Charlemagne.

🍺 Saint Arnulf is traditionally invoked for:

Brewers, brewery owners, and those working in the brewing industry
Protection and blessing of honest labor
Provision and relief in times of need
Forgiveness, repentance, and spiritual renewal
Those seeking strength to leave worldly ambitions behind
Devotion to the early medieval saints of Metz and Lorraine

This handcrafted icon makes a meaningful gift for brewers, beer enthusiasts, monks, clergy, historians, and those named Arnulf, Arnold, or Arnoul, as well as anyone drawn to the rich Christian heritage of Metz, Lorraine, and medieval Europe.
