Wooden icon of Noah's Ark

According to the book of Genesis, after the creation of man, 1656 years later, the Lord God saw the great sinfulness of people on earth. At that time, God saw only one person on earth who lived according to God's laws. Only Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

God ordered Noah to build an ark, into which Noah, his three sons entered: Shem, Ham, Japheth and their wives, as well as animals (seven male and female clean animals, two unclean animals), clean birds (seven each), unclean birds (two each), placing them in an ark with sufficient supplies of food. Coming out of the ark, Noah made a sacrifice to God, and He promised that He would no longer destroy humanity for its sins. God blesses Noah and his descendants. As a sign of the covenant, God establishes a sign - a rainbow.

The main points of the story of Noah - sin, judgment, faith, righteousness, salvation, sacrifice, covenant, new beginning - are cross-cutting for the entire Bible.

The story of Noah serves as a prototype for many biblical events - and above all, the events of the New Testament.

Noah is mentioned repeatedly in the New Testament. The Lord Jesus Christ refers to his story as very real and uses it to explain what will happen before the end of our world.

In the history of the Church - starting with the Apostles - the story of Noah was perceived as a prototype of the realities of the New Testament. From the point of view of the Apostles, the story of Noah relates to us in the most direct way. The flood signifies the coming judgment; The Ark is the Church in which the faithful are saved; the sacrifices that Noah made point to the sacrifice of Christ. When we are baptized, we find ourselves, like Noah, new people in a new world. The Church calls on all people to take their place in the ark of salvation - to be saved from the flood of sin and death.
