The theological foundation of this image reaches back to the earliest centuries of the Church. The Apostle Paul proclaimed Christ as "the power of God and the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:24), and from this apostolic understanding the entire tradition of Sophianic iconography flows. When the great princes of Kievan Rus dedicated their finest cathedrals to Hagia Sophia — Holy Wisdom — they were not honoring an abstraction. They were honoring Christ Himself, the incarnate Wisdom of the Father, who by taking flesh had built His house among humanity, just as the Book of Proverbs had foretold: "Wisdom has built herself a house" (Proverbs 9:1). This phrase, interpreted by Hippolytus of Rome in the third century and carried into Russian theological consciousness through the great Izbornik of Prince Svyatoslav in 1073, became one of the cornerstones of Orthodox reflection on the mystery of the Incarnation.

The icon also bears a second, equally magnificent title: The Holy Hosts of Jesus Christ — The Invincible Power of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord — a name that opens the cosmic dimension of the image. The Church, embodied and personified in the Mother of God, is herself the image and dwelling-place of this Wisdom — which is why so many of the greatest Byzantine and Russian cathedrals bear the name of Sophia, and why the Theotokos appears so often at the center of these icons. She is the house that Wisdom built; He is the Wisdom who built it.

The word Sophia carried in the consciousness of Orthodox believers a fullness of meaning that no single translation can exhaust: the personal name of the Second Person of the Trinity in His eternal wisdom; the name of the Church as the body of Christ and the first-fruit of the coming Kingdom; the seal of the Holy Spirit upon the children and servants of Wisdom; and the name of God's gift of wisdom itself — that divine illumination by which human minds are raised toward the knowledge of their Creator.
