Icon of Nossa Senhora do Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar)
This icon depicts Saint James the Greater (Santiago), kneeling in prayer beneath a marble pillar upon which the Virgin Mary appears, crowned and radiant, holding the Christ Child in her arms, surrounded by a chorus of angels in the heavens above.
According to Christian tradition, this apparition took place near the banks of the Ebro River in Zaragoza, Spain, sometime in the first century, while Saint James was preaching the Gospel throughout the region and had converted only a small number of souls to the faith. One night, as he rested with his disciples, he heard the voices of angels singing "Ave Maria, full of grace," and looking up, beheld the Virgin Mary seated upon a pillar of marble, borne there, according to the account, by angels sent from heaven, though she herself had not yet died and remained in Jerusalem at the time. She spoke to James, telling him that this was the place where a church should be built in her honor, promising that through her intercession at this very pillar, the Lord would work wonders for all who called upon her in their need, and that the pillar itself would remain there until the end of the world.
Moved by the vision, Saint James built a small chapel on the spot with the help of his disciples, placing the sacred pillar above the altar, facing the river. Over the centuries the chapel grew into the great Basílica del Pilar of Zaragoza, one of the most venerated Marian shrines in the Spanish-speaking world, and the pillar itself is said to remain intact to this day, having survived invasions, wars, and the passage of nearly two thousand years.
Nossa Senhora do Pilar holds the distinction of being the oldest Marian title in Christian tradition, and she is venerated as the comforter of the afflicted, the refuge of sinners, and the patroness and spiritual mother of Spain. Her devotion carried deep roots into Latin America, where her feast day, October 12, came to coincide with the commemoration of the discovery of the Americas — a date still celebrated across the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world as the Día del Pilar.
This image is a moving reminder of Mary's promise of constant intercession — a Mother who remains present, steadfast as a pillar, for all who turn to her in prayer.
Her feast day is celebrated on October 12.
