Saint Nicholas, Panteleimon & Seraphim of Sarov with Saints — Orthodox Icon

This remarkable 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon brings together five revered saints beneath the protective presence of a Guardian Angel.

At the center stands Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, flanked by Saint Panteleimon and Saint Seraphim of Sarov. At the outer edges stand Saint Demetrius of Rostov and Saint Theodosius of Chernigov.

From left to right, the icon depicts:

Saint Demetrius of Rostov
Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer
Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker
Saint Seraphim of Sarov
Saint Theodosius of Chernigov

Above the group appears a Guardian Angel, extending his arms over the assembled saints.

The original icon was painted in Russia in the 19th century and is preserved in a private collection.

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker at the Center

The central position belongs to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, one of the most universally venerated saints in Orthodox Christianity.

He is depicted as a bishop, wearing richly ornamented episcopal vestments and holding the Gospel.

His placement at the center establishes Saint Nicholas as the principal figure of the composition.

The other saints form a sacred assembly around him, representing different forms of Christian holiness: bishops, a martyr and healer, a monastic elder and wonderworkers.

The Five Saints Depicted in the Icon

On the far left stands Saint Demetrius of Rostov, depicted in episcopal vestments.

Next to him is Saint Panteleimon, the young Great Martyr and Unmercenary Healer, traditionally invoked in prayers for the sick and suffering.

At the center is Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Bishop of Myra.

To his right stands Saint Seraphim of Sarov, recognizable as an elderly monastic saint dressed in a dark mantle over his light monastic garments.

On the far right is Saint Theodosius of Chernigov, represented as a bishop.

Bringing these saints together creates a composition centered not upon one historical event, but upon their shared intercession and communion in Christ.

Saint Seraphim of Sarov in the Icon

Saint Seraphim of Sarov appears immediately to the right of Saint Nicholas.

Unlike icons devoted exclusively to Saint Seraphim, he is represented here as part of a larger assembly of saints.

His right hand rests over his chest, while his monastic clothing distinguishes him from the bishops and from the young martyr Panteleimon.

This placement is particularly interesting because it shows how Saint Seraphim could be incorporated into multi-saint devotional compositions alongside other highly venerated Russian and universal Orthodox saints.

The Guardian Angel Above the Saints

Above the five saints appears a large Guardian Angel, his wings spread and his arms extended over the group.

The heavenly figure creates a second visual level in the composition.

Below stands the earthly assembly of saints; above them appears the angelic presence.

The arrangement reinforces the Orthodox understanding of the Church as a communion embracing both the saints and the angelic powers.

Saint Demetrius of Rostov

Saint Demetrius of Rostov was a bishop, theologian, preacher and one of the important spiritual writers of the Russian Orthodox tradition.

He is particularly associated with his monumental collection of the Lives of the Saints, which became enormously influential in Russian religious culture.

In the icon he appears in episcopal vestments on the far left.

Saint Panteleimon the Healer

Saint Panteleimon was an early Christian martyr and physician and is venerated as one of the great Unmercenary Healers of the Orthodox Church.

He occupies the place immediately beside Saint Nicholas.

His youthful appearance distinguishes him clearly from the older bishops and monastic saints surrounding him.

The presence of Saint Panteleimon gives the composition a particularly strong association with prayer for healing and help in illness.

Saint Theodosius of Chernigov

On the far right stands Saint Theodosius of Chernigov, a hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.

He is depicted in episcopal vestments, visually balancing Saint Demetrius of Rostov on the opposite side of the composition.

This creates a carefully ordered arrangement:

bishop → martyr and healer → Saint Nicholas → monastic elder → bishop.

Saint Nicholas therefore becomes both the visual and spiritual center of the assembly.

Why Are Several Saints Depicted Together?

Multi-saint icons were often created for particular devotional purposes.

The selection of saints could reflect the namesake or patron saints of members of a family, saints to whom the commissioners had a particular devotion, or heavenly intercessors associated with specific needs.

Without documented provenance for the original icon, however, we cannot know with certainty why these particular five saints were chosen.

It is therefore better to understand their combination as a distinctive feature of this historical icon rather than to assign a specific undocumented meaning to the group.

A 19th-Century Russian Multi-Saint Icon

The original composition dates to the 19th century and is preserved in a private collection.

Its elaborate ornamental border, hierarchical arrangement of figures and unusual selection of saints make it a distinctive example of a Russian multi-saint devotional icon.

Rather than presenting an episode from Scripture or the Life of a single saint, the icon brings several heavenly intercessors together within one sacred image.

Meaning of the Icon

The composition can be understood as an image of intercession and the communion of saints.

Saint Nicholas occupies the center as the principal hierarch.

Saint Panteleimon represents the tradition of the martyr and healer.

Saint Seraphim represents monastic asceticism and spiritual eldership.

Saint Demetrius and Saint Theodosius represent the episcopal tradition of the Church.

Above them, the Guardian Angel introduces the angelic realm into the composition.

Together they create an unusually rich image bringing several different forms of Orthodox sanctity into a single icon.

Our Reproduction

Our reproduction preserves the unusual composition of the historical icon, including its five saints, Guardian Angel and richly ornamented border.

The image is carefully reproduced on a prepared wooden panel and individually hand-finished with natural beeswax in our family workshop in Portugal.

For those with devotion to several of the saints represented here, this icon offers a rare opportunity to bring Saint Nicholas, Saint Panteleimon, Saint Seraphim of Sarov, Saint Demetrius of Rostov and Saint Theodosius of Chernigov together in a single devotional image.
