Nestor the Chronicler of the Kiev Caves. Wooden orthodox icon.
Saint Nestor the Chronicler was born in the 50s of the 11th century in Kyiv. At the age of 17 he entered the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. He was a novice of Saint Theodosius. He received his tonsure from Abbot Stefan, the successor of Theodosius. The young ascetic soon surpassed even the famous Pechersk elders in his purity of life, prayer and obedience. He was ordained a hierodeacon. His high spiritual life is evidenced by the fact that he, along with other holy fathers, participated in the expulsion of the demon from Nikita the Recluse, later the Novgorod Saint (commemorated on January 31), who had been seduced by Jewish wisdom. Saint Nestor is the compiler of the original history of our Fatherland, or chronicle, where he sets out the story of the beginning of the Russian land and the subsequent events of its history up to the year 1100. In addition, he wrote the lives of the holy princes Boris and Gleb, "The Tale of the First Pechersk Ascetics", etc.
Nestor reached a ripe old age and died peacefully around 1114.
