This Orthodox icon depicts Saint Martyr Queen Alexandra of Rome (Nicomedia), Empress, one of the early Christian martyrs and a radiant witness to faith in Christ. The image is based on an 1883 original, reflecting the refined devotional style of late 19th-century Orthodox iconography.

Saint Alexandra was the wife of Emperor Diocletian, one of the fiercest persecutors of Christians. Living at the imperial court, she witnessed the sufferings and courage of the holy martyrs—especially Saint George the Victorious. Deeply moved by their unwavering confession of Christ, Alexandra secretly embraced the Christian faith.

According to tradition, when Saint George was subjected to cruel tortures, Saint Alexandra openly confessed Christ before the emperor, declaring that she too believed in the God who gave His servant such strength and endurance. By this bold confession, she renounced imperial glory and chose the path of martyrdom.

For her faith, Saint Alexandra was imprisoned and sentenced to death. On the way to execution, weakened by suffering, she peacefully surrendered her soul to God, thus receiving the crown of martyrdom without the shedding of blood. Her repose is traditionally dated to the early 4th century, during the reign of Diocletian.
