Icon of Saint Martha of Antioch, the Venerable Mother of Saint Simeon the Wonderful Mountain, Stylite, and the Holy Martyr Justina

Saint Martha, mother of Saint Simeon of Divnogorsk, the Stylite (information about him is placed on May 24), was from Antioch. From a young age, she aspired to monasticism, but her parents convinced her to marry. Her husband, John, soon died, and Saint Martha devoted all her strength to raising her son. She was an example of high Christian sentiment for her son: she often visited the temples of God, listened attentively and reverently to church services, and often received the Holy Mysteries of Christ. Every night Saint Martha rose to pray, which she did with heartfelt warmth and tears. She especially revered Saint John, the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, who was her patron and often appeared to her in visions. Saint Martha was merciful to the poor, fed and clothed them, visited hospitals, served the sick, and buried the dead, preparing clothes with her own hands for those who were preparing to receive Holy Baptism.

Saint Martha was silent, no one heard an idle, false or empty word from her, no one saw her angry, arguing with anyone or sad. She was a model of a chaste, pious life and by her example she instructed many on the path of salvation. When her son, Saint Simeon, became a famous ascetic, she, visiting him, inspired him not to exalt himself with his exploits, but to attribute everything to the action of God's grace.

Saint Martha was told in advance of her imminent death: she saw Angels with candles, who said that they would come for her in a year. The saint was also granted a vision of the heavenly abodes, and the Most Pure Virgin Herself showed her the heavenly dwellings prepared for the righteous.

The death of Saint Martha was peaceful († 551), and her body was buried on the Wondrous Mountain, at the place of the exploit of her son, the Venerable Simeon the Stylite.
