This sacred Orthodox icon depicts Saint Martha of Antioch, the devoted mother of Saint Simeon the Wonderful Mountain, Stylite, and the Holy Martyr Justina. Crafted for faithful veneration, this icon honors the life of a saint who exemplified prayer, mercy, and unwavering Christian devotion.
Born in Antioch, Saint Martha aspired to monastic life from a young age, but marriage to John temporarily delayed her calling. After his early death, she dedicated herself entirely to raising her son, Saint Simeon, guiding him in humility, piety, and the grace of God. Known for her nightly prayers, charitable works, and compassionate care for the poor and sick, she became a model of virtue and silent devotion.
Saint Martha revered Saint John the Baptist, who often appeared to her in visions, and she lived a life free of anger, envy, or false speech. Near the end of her life, she received visions of heavenly angels and the Most Pure Virgin, foretelling her peaceful passing. Saint Martha died in 551, and her relics were laid to rest on the Wondrous Mountain, beside the site of her son’s ascetic labors.
