Wooden Icon Warrior Saint Alexander Nevsky (Aleksandr) in the monastic schema
Alexander Nevsky, canonized in 1547, was the Grand Prince of Vladimir and Novgorod during the 13th century. His skillful defense of Russian territories against both Eastern and Western invaders secured the nation's territorial integrity, and remains a beacon of courage and faith to this day. In an age of political unrest, Nevsky's military prowess and diplomatic finesse prevented foreign subjugation; his submission to the Tatar khan allowed for the preservation of Novgorod and other Russian lands. Thus, Nevsky's selfless protection of his people has solidified his legacy as a holy warrior and defender of his nation.
Alexander Nevsky is a great Russian ruler, an example of a wise Christian life.
Prince Alexander Yaroslavovich (1220-1263) was also the Prince of Novgorod, Kyiv, and later the Grand Duke of Vladimir. He was a talented commander - during the Battle of the Neva (1240) he was 20 years old, during the Battle of the Ice - 22 years old. Subsequently, he became more famous as a politician and diplomat, but in his entire life, Prince Alexander did not lose a single battle. He managed to create an Orthodox diocese in the Golden Horde.
Alexander Nevsky was canonized as a noble prince. This rank of saints includes people who have become famous for their sincere deep faith and good deeds, as well as Orthodox rulers who managed to remain faithful to Christ in their public service and in various political vicissitudes.
