This icon of the Mother of God “The Burning Bush” is a profound symbol of divine mystery and protection. The original dates back to the mid-17th century in Northern Russia and today is preserved in a private collection.

At the center of the icon is the Theotokos with the Christ Child, surrounded by heavenly angels and the four Evangelists in the corners. Along the borders are Old Testament prophets holding scrolls with prophecies of the coming of the Savior and His Mother.

The name “Burning Bush” comes from the Old Testament vision of Moses, who saw a bush burning with fire yet not consumed (Exodus 3:2). In Orthodox tradition, this foreshadows the Virgin Mary, who bore Christ by the Holy Spirit while remaining pure and undefiled. The Burning Bush thus reveals the mystery of the Incarnation and the unique role of the Mother of God in salvation history.

The feast of this icon is celebrated on September 4/17, and Orthodox Christians have long prayed before it for the protection of their homes from fire and calamity.
