"Ancient of Days" — Christ Enthroned

This icon depicts Jesus Christ in His eternal, pre-incarnate divine majesty, enthroned as the Ancient of Days (Vetkhiy Dniami — Ветхий Денми), as foretold in the vision of the Prophet Daniel (Daniel 7:9–14). The inscription ІС ХС (the Greek Christogram for Iisus Khristos) identifies Him, while the title Ветхий Денми (Ancient of Days) reveals His eternal, uncreated nature — one with the Father from before all ages.

Christ is shown as a venerable Elder with white hair and beard, clothed in radiant garments, seated upon a glorious throne — signifying that He who became Man is also the eternal Lord of all creation, the Alpha and Omega, the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

In the four corners of the icon are the symbols of the four Evangelists, as seen by the Prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1:10) and the Apostle John in Revelation (Revelation 4:6–8):

The Angel — St. Matthew, who begins his Gospel with the human genealogy of Christ
The Lion — St. Mark, whose Gospel opens with the voice crying in the wilderness
The Bull (Ox) — St. Luke, whose Gospel begins with the priestly sacrifice
The Eagle — St. John, whose soaring theology reaches the heights of divine mystery

Together, these four living creatures bear witness that all four Gospels point to the one enthroned Lord. The icon invites the faithful to contemplate the unity of the eternal Son of God with the incarnate Saviour — that the humble Jesus of Nazareth and the Ancient of Days upon the throne are one and the same Person of the Holy Trinity.
