Wooden Icon of the Mother of Sicily (Divnogorsk) (Divnogorsk-Sicilian)
The Divnogorsk-Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God received its name from the place of its initial stay and glorification in the Assumption Divnogorsk Monastery, in the former Ostrogozhsk district of the Voronezh province, and the Sicilian icon was named after its place of origin, since, according to legend, this icon was brought to Diva (or Divnye Gory) from Sicily by the pious elders, monks Xenophon and Ioasaf.
It is believed that they were originally Orthodox Greeks and probably arrived here no earlier than the end of the 15th century. Xenophon and Ioasaf founded a monastery in a picturesque place above the Don River, at the confluence of the Tikhaya Sosnovaya River. Divas and Divi (Divnye) Mountains, the area is so named because of the chalk pillars located along the mountains, amazing in their shape.
It is assumed that Xenophon and Ioasaph lived in a cave (where the Church of St. John the Baptist was later built) and that the first church in the chalk pillar was cut down by them, where they placed the icon of the Mother of God, brought with them from Sicily. Here they also found their eternal refuge.
On the icon of the Sicilian (Divnogorsk) Mother of God, the Mother of God is depicted sitting on clouds. In her right hand is a blooming white lily, and with her left hand she supports the Virgin Child, Who sits on her lap. The Savior holds a flower (lily) in his left hand, and blesses with his right. Around the face of the Mother of God are depicted eight Angels, of which the two written below are depicted kneeling and with their hands raised to the mountain. Above the head of the Mother of God is the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.
The icon is made by printing on a wooden board. Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 2 cm. The board is covered with primer by hand. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.
