Wooden Icon of the Mother of God "Deliverer from Troubles" with Saints Simon the Canaanite and Panteleimon the Healer
This Orthodox icon depicts the Mother of God “The Deliverer” (Izbavitelnitsa) with Saint Apostle Simon the Zealot (Canaanite) and Saint Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon. The original icon dates to 1900 and is closely connected with the New Athos Simon the Canaanite Monastery.
The icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer” was venerated on Mount Athos for many years in the Russian Monastery of Saint Panteleimon. In 1889 it was solemnly brought to the New Athos Monastery in the Caucasus, where it became especially renowned for its miraculous help and protection. Through prayer before this holy image, cities were delivered from calamities, storms were calmed, and people received unexpected help in times of danger.
Saint Simon the Zealot, one of the Twelve Apostles, is traditionally identified with Simon of Cana, in whose home Christ performed His first miracle—turning water into wine at the wedding feast. After Pentecost, the apostle preached Christ in Judea, Egypt, Libya, and Britain, and finally suffered martyrdom in Abkhazia, where his memory remains deeply honored.
Saint Panteleimon the Healer, a beloved physician-martyr, is revered as a powerful intercessor for healing of soul and body. His presence on the icon emphasizes mercy, compassion, and God’s healing grace.
The Mother of God is shown holding the Christ Child on Her right arm, while He blesses the faithful with His right hand—an image of divine protection, deliverance, and hope. This icon is especially prayed before for deliverance from dangers, healing, protection of family, and help in difficult circumstances.
