History and Significance
The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most revered Orthodox icons, known for its miraculous protection of Russia. According to tradition, it was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist and brought to Kiev from Constantinople in the 12th century. In 1155, Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky transferred it to Vladimir, where it became the spiritual protector of Russia.
The icon is famous for its miraculous interventions, especially in times of war. In 1395, it was moved to Moscow to protect the city from Tamerlane’s invasion. Soon after, Tamerlane retreated without attacking, which was considered a divine intervention. The icon continued to be a symbol of protection, blessing Russian rulers and soldiers.
Why is it Unique?
- It is a rare example of the Eleusa (Tenderness) iconographic type, depicting the Virgin Mary lovingly pressing her cheek to the Christ Child.
- It has survived wars and fires, preserving its sacred significance.
- Countless miracles, including healings and divine interventions, have been attributed to it.
Today, the Vladimir Icon remains a powerful symbol of faith, divine love, and intercession, continuing to inspire millions of believers.
The icon is made by printing on a wooden board (mdf). Paints are mineral, do not fade with time. The thickness of the board is 1,6 cm. The board is covered with primer. The image is covered with wax. Each icon has a metal mount on the back side so that you can hang the icon on the wall.
