Wooden Icon of the Holy Martyr Princess Lyudmila of Czechia

The Holy Martyr Lyudmila, Princess of Bohemia, was given in marriage to the Bohemian Prince Borivoj. The couple received Holy Baptism from St. Methodius, Archbishop of Moravia, educator of the Slavs. Having become Christians, they showed concern for enlightening their subjects with the light of the true faith, built churches and invited priests to perform divine services in them. Prince Borivoy died early, at the age of 36.

Saint Lyudmila, remaining a widow, led a strict, pious life and continued to take care of the Church during the reign of her son Vratislav, which lasted 33 years. Vratislav was married to Dragomir, with her he had a son, Vyacheslav. After the death of Vratislav, 18-year-old Vyacheslav ascended the throne. Taking advantage of the inexperience and youth of her son, Dragomira began to instill pagan customs and morals in the country.

Saint Lyudmila opposed this. Dragomira hated her mother-in-law and tried to destroy her. When Saint Lyudmila retired to the city of Techin, Dragomira sent two boyars to kill her. While Saint Lyudmila was praying, the murderers entered the house and carried out Dragomira’s command.

The relics of the holy martyr Lyudmila were buried in Techina near the city wall. Numerous healings began to take place from her coffin. Prince Vyacheslav took the body of Saint Lyudmila to Prague and laid it in the Church of Saint George.
